Chapter Eight · A child's plea to the good · Verses 1–

The poet bows to the 8,400,000 kinds of living beings, living in water, on land and in the sky, seeing all the world as Sītā and Rāma. He asks them all to leave aside their tricks and be kind to a servant. He has no trust in his own wit, so he asks them all. He wants to sing the virtues of Raghupati, but his mind is small and Rāma's story deep. No way comes to him: his mind is a beggar with a king's wishes. His wit is low and his taste high; he wants nectar and cannot find even buttermilk. The good will forgive his boldness and listen to a child's words, as parents hear a baby's lisp with joy. The wicked and crooked who wear others' faults as ornaments will laugh. Who does not love his own verse, dull or sweet? Those who enjoy another's poem are few. Many people are like lakes and streams that rise only by their own flood; rare is the one who, like the sea, swells at seeing the full moon. In the dohā the poet says his luck is small and his wish large, yet one thing he trusts: good people will take joy, and the wicked will laugh.

There are eight million four hundred thousand kinds of living beings, living in water, on land and in the sky. Seeing the whole world as full of Sītā and Rāma, I bow to all of them with my hands joined.

Verse 2

Knowing me to be a servant of the Merciful One, put aside your tricks and be kind to me, all of you together. I have no trust in my own wit or strength, and so I plead with you all.

I want to sing the story of Raghupati's virtues, but my mind is small and his deeds are too deep to measure. No way, not even one part of it, comes to mind: my mind and wit are poor, while my wishes are a king's.

Verse 4

My wit is very low and my taste is high. I want nectar, and the world cannot give even buttermilk. The good will forgive my boldness and listen to a child's words with attention.

When a child lisps, mother and father listen with a glad heart. But the cruel, the crooked and the ill-thinking, who wear another's faults as ornaments, will laugh.
