Chapter Twelve · A small mind before the boundless · Verses 1–

The poet says those born in the fearful dark age wear the disguise of a swan but act like a crow, leave the Vedic path for a crooked one, and are a pot of deceit and sin. They pass for devotees of Rāma, yet are servants of gold, anger and lust. Of such cheats the poet says he is first, stubborn, a flag-bearer of dharma and the yoke-ox of wickedness. If he told all his faults the tale would grow with no end, so he says little, and hopes the wise will understand much from little. He hopes no one will blame him after hearing his many pleas; and those who still doubt are more foolish than he. He is no poet, nor does he claim to be clever; he sings Rāma's virtues as his mind allows. How great are Raghupati's deeds, how small his mind, bent on the world. The wind that lifts Mount Meru, what is cotton to it? Thinking of Rāma's boundless greatness, his mind trembles at telling. In the dohā, Sarasvatī, Śeṣa, Śiva, Brahmā, the Āgamas, the Nigamas and the Purāṇas, saying 'not this, not this', sing his qualities without end.

Those who are born in the terrible dark age, with the deeds of crows in the dress of swans, walk the wrong path and leave the road of the Vedas. They are vessels of deceit and the dirt of the age.

Verse 2

They call themselves devotees of Rāma and cheat the world, yet they are servants of gold, anger and lust. Among them my name stands first in the world: stubborn, a carrier of the flag of dharma, a yoke-ox of the trade.

Verse 3

If I told all my own faults the tale would grow and I would never reach the end. So I have said very little. The wise will understand much from little.

Verse 4

Understanding my many kinds of pleas, let no one blame me when he hears the story. And those who still doubt, in spite of this, are more foolish and poorer of mind than I.

Verse 5

I am no poet and I do not call myself clever. According to my wit I sing Rāma's virtues. How great are Raghupati's endless deeds, and how small is my mind, bent on the world!

Sarasvatī, Śeṣa, Śiva, Brahmā, the Āgamas, the Nigamas and the Purāṇas, saying 'not this, not this', go on singing his qualities without ceasing.

Explanation

Neti neti, 'not this, not this', is the Vedic way of saying that the Lord cannot be reached by any description.
