The courtiers said: The king always wakes in the last watch of the night; today we are surprised. Sumantra, go and wake him, so that we may do our work at his command. Sumantra went into the palace but was afraid to see it so dreadful: it seemed to rush to devour him, a home of trouble and grief. No one answered his question. He went to the house where the king and Kaikeyī were, said Long live the king, bowed and sat. Seeing the king's state he was struck dry. The king lay on the ground, distressed and pale, like a lotus that has left its root. The minister, afraid, could not ask. Kaikeyī spoke, her words full of ill and empty of good: The king has not slept all night; only God knows why. Sumantra then went into the palace, but seeing it so dreadful he was afraid. It seemed to rush to devour him, as if it were the dwelling of trouble and sorrow.
