The king, restless, kept repeating Rāma's name, like a bird without wings. In his heart he prayed that morning might not come and nobody tell Rāma. Do not let the sun rise, he thought, lest he see Ayodhyā and be pained. Between the king's love and Kaikeyī's cruelty, fate had drawn two limits. While he was lamenting, dawn came; the sound of lutes, flutes and conches began at the door. Bards recited and singers sang praise, and to the king it was like arrows striking. No lucky sound pleased, like ornaments on a woman who is to burn with her husband. No one slept that night, longing for the sight of Rāma. At the door, servants and ministers, seeing the sun rise, said: why has the lord of Ayodhyā not yet woken?
