जाइ दीख रघुबंसमनि नरपति निपट कुसाजु

The king said: Bring Rāma quickly and ask the news after. Sumantra went, knowing the king's mind and guessing that the queen had done something wrong. Sick with worry he could not step properly: what will the king say when he calls Rāma? Holding firm in his heart, he reached the gate, where all asked him, seeing his dead look. He quietened them all and went where the sun-line's mark, Rāma, was. Rāma saw Sumantra coming and honoured him as a father. Looking at his face and giving the king's order, he went with him, the lamp of the Raghus. Rāma went with the minister, a bad sign; people everywhere wept to see it. Rāma went in and saw the king very ill-adorned, shrinking like an old elephant seeing a lioness. राजा ने कहा: राम को जल्दी बुला लाओ, फिर आकर समाचार पूछना। सुमन्त्र राजा का रुख जानकर चले; उन्होंने समझ लिया कि रानी ने कुछ बुरा किया है। सोच से व्याकुल, मार्ग में उनके पाँव नहीं पड़ते थे: राम को बुलाकर राजा क्या कहेंगे? मन में धीरज रखकर वे द्वार पर पहुँचे; सब लोग उन्हें मन मारे देखकर पूछने लगे। सबका समाधान करके वे वहाँ पहुँचे जहाँ सूर्यकुल के तिलक राम थे। राम ने सुमन्त्र को आते देखा और पिता के समान आदर किया। मुख देखकर और राजा की आज्ञा कहकर वे रघुकुल के दीपक राम को लेकर चले। राम बुरे ढंग से मंत्री के साथ जा रहे हैं, यह देखकर लोग जहाँ-तहाँ बिलखने लगे। जाकर रघुवंश-मणि ने राजा को बहुत बुरी दशा में देखा: वे सहमे पड़े थे, जैसे सिंहनी को देखकर बूढ़ा गजराज।
