The king's lips were dry and his whole body burned, like a poor snake that has lost its jewel. Near him Rāma saw Kaikeyī in anger, as if she counted the hours of Death. Rāma, kind and soft by nature, had never seen or heard of grief before. Yet he steadied himself, thought of the time and asked his mother in sweet words: Tell me, mother, why father is sad, that I may try to end it. Kaikeyī said: Listen, Rāma, this is all the cause. The king loves you greatly. He told me I might ask two boons, and I asked what pleased me. Hearing it, the king grew troubled, for out of regard for you he cannot give it up. On one side love for his son, on the other his word: the king is caught between. If you can, take his command on your head and end his hard pain.
