Chapter 25 · The king finds Kaikeyī · Verses 1–

Hearing that Kaikeyī was in the anger-room, the king shrank back, too afraid to step forward. He whose strength made Indra live in peace was dried up by his wife's anger. See the power of desire: those who bore spears and thunderbolts were struck down by Kāma's flower-arrows. The king found her on the ground in coarse old cloth, her ornaments thrown aside. He touched her gently and asked why she was angry; she looked back at him like an angry snake. The king, bound by what must be, took it for a lover's play, and begged her again and again to tell him the reason.

Hearing that Kaikeyī was in the anger-room, the king shrank back. Out of fear his foot would not go forward. He on whose arm's strength Indra lives, and before whose wish all kings stand, dried up at hearing his wife's anger. See how great is the power of desire!

The frightened king went to his beloved and was terribly pained to see her state. She lay on the ground in coarse old cloth, having thrown away all her many ornaments.

Bad dress suited her bad mind, like a sign of widowhood to come. Going close, the king said in a soft voice: 'Beloved, why are you angry?'

'Why, queen, are you angry?' he said, touching her with his hand to stop her. She looked at him fiercely, like an angry snake, her two desires like tongue and fangs seeking a tender spot. Tulasī says the king, bound by what must be, took it as lover's play.

Again and again the king said: 'Fair-faced, fair-eyed, cuckoo-voiced, elephant-gaited, tell me the reason for your anger.'
