Chapter 158 · Bharata nears the city · Verses 1–

The messengers ride at the speed of the wind, crossing rivers, hills and rough forests. Bharata is deeply worried, nothing pleases him, and he feels he would fly if he could. Each moment passes like a year. Entering the city he meets bad omens: crows cawing from bad places, donkeys and jackals crying the wrong way. Hearing them, Bharata's mind is pierced. The lakes, rivers, woods and gardens look ruined, and the city looks most fearful. Birds, animals, horses and elephants cannot be looked at, struck by the bad disease of Rāma's parting. The men and women of the city are deeply sad, as if all had lost every possession. The dohā says the citizens meet him but say nothing; they greet him quietly and go on, and Bharata, afraid and sad, cannot ask for news.

The riders went at the speed of the wind, whipping the horses and crossing rivers, hills and rough forests. Bharata's heart was heavy with worry and nothing pleased him. He felt that he would fly if he could.
