The shops and roads cannot be looked at; the city seems to be in a forest fire on all ten sides. Hearing that her son is coming, Kaikeyī is glad, moonlight to the lotus of the Sun line. She arranges the lamp for welcome, rises and runs, meets him at the door and brings him in. Bharata sees the family in sorrow, as if frost had killed a lotus bed. Kaikeyī is glad, like a hunter-woman pleased at lighting a forest fire. Seeing her son anxious and dull, she asks about his maternal home. Bharata tells her all is well and asks about his own family, asking where his father is, where all the mothers are, and where Sītā, Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa are. Hearing her son's loving words, with false tears in her eyes, the sinner speaks words that pierce Bharata's ears and mind like a spear.

Explanation

A lotus opens to the sun and closes in moonlight: she is a harm to the Sun line, though she is glad.

She arranged the lamp of welcome, rose gladly and ran, met him at the door and brought him into the palace. Bharata saw the family sad, as if frost had killed a bed of lotuses.

Kaikeyī was glad in this way, like a hunter-woman pleased at setting a forest on fire. Seeing her son worried and dull, she asked if all was well at his mother's family home.

Hearing her son's loving words, her eyes full of false tears, the sinful woman spoke words that were like a spear in Bharata's ears and mind.
