Chapter 160·The news of the king's death·Verses 1–
Kaikeyī says she arranged everything with Mantharā's help, but fate spoiled a little in the middle: the king has gone to Indra's city. Hearing it, Bharata is helpless with grief, like a deer frightened by a lion's roar. He cries 'Father, ah father', and falls to the ground in distress. He says he did not see his father leave and was not entrusted to Rāma. Then he takes courage, stands up and asks his mother how his father died. Hearing it, Kaikeyī speaks as if rubbing poison on a wound, telling all her own deeds from the beginning, crooked, hard and glad. In the dohā, hearing of Rāma's exile makes Bharata forget his father's death. He knows himself to be the cause and stays silent, stunned.
