Chapter 161 · 'Do not grieve for the king' · Verses 1–

Seeing her son distressed, Kaikeyī consoles him, but it is like rubbing salt on a burn. She says the king is not to be mourned: he did good deeds, spread his fame and enjoyed life. He won all the fruit of his birth while alive and went to Indra's home at the end. She asks him to give up grief and rule the city with the court. Bharata is shaken as if fire had been put on a ripe boil. He steadies himself, sighs, and says she is a sinner who has ruined the family in every way. If she had such an evil liking, why did she not kill him at birth? She cut down the tree and watered its leaves; she lets the fish live and bails out its water every day. In the dohā he says that a swan-line, Daśaratha, Janaka, brothers like Rāma and Lakṣmaṇa: and she became his mother. Nothing can be done against fate.
