Chapter 162 · Bharata's rebuke · Verses 1–

Bharata asks why her heart did not break to pieces, her tongue not rot and no worm fall into her mouth when she asked for the boon. He asks how the king trusted her, and says fate took his mind at the time of death. Even fate does not know a woman's heart, a mine of all deceit, sin and faults. The king was simple, good and devoted to dharma; how could he know a woman's nature? He asks who in the world does not love Raghunātha as dear as life, and says even Rāma has become her enemy: who is she, truly? He tells her to smear her face with soot and sit out of his sight, whatever she laughed. In the dohā he says fate made him come from the heart of one who hates Rāma, and who is as great a sinner as he: it is useless to say anything to her.

'From the time your wicked mind set a wicked plan in your heart, why did it not break into pieces? When you asked for the boons, you felt no pain; your tongue did not rot, and no worm fell into your mouth.

Verse 2

How did the king trust you? At the time of death fate took away his mind. Even fate did not know the working of a woman's heart, a mine of all deceit, sin and faults.

The king was simple, good and devoted to dharma. How could he know a woman's nature? Is there any creature in the world to whom Raghunātha is not as dear as life?
