Chapter 157·Messengers to Bharata·Verses 1–
The king's body is placed in a boat of oil. Vasiṣṭha calls messengers and tells them to run to Bharata and tell no one anywhere of the king. They are only to say that the guru has called both brothers. Hearing the sage's order, the messengers run, shaming the best horses by their speed. Since the misfortune began in Ayodhyā, Bharata has seen ill omens. At night he sees dreadful dreams and, waking, makes bitter countless fancies. He feeds Brahmins, gives gifts every day and performs Śiva's anointing in many ways. In his heart he begs Maheśa for the welfare of his mother, father, family and brothers. As he worries so, the messengers arrive. Hearing the guru's order, he leaves, praying to Gaṇeśa.
