Chapter 156·Mourning and Vasiṣṭha·Verses 1–
The poet says Daśaratha won the fruit of both living and dying: his pure fame spread over many worlds. He saw Rāma's moon-face while he lived and made his death by Rāma's parting. All the queens weep in grief, telling of Rāma's beauty, goodness, strength and splendour. They lament in many ways and fall on the ground again and again. Men and women servants wail, and in every house the townspeople cry. They say that today the sun of the Sun line has set, the limit of dharma, a treasure of virtue and beauty. They all curse Kaikeyī, who made the world blind. So the night passes, and all the great wise sages come. Then Vasiṣṭha speaks of many old tales suited to the time and ends everyone's sorrow with the light of his own wisdom.
