Chapter Two · The Teaching of Brahma-Knowledge · Verses 1–34

Chapter 16 of the Mahābhāgavata, the second chapter of the Pārvatī Gītā. Himavān asks what the knowledge is by which freedom comes, and what the Self is. Pārvatī answers briefly. The Self is apart from intellect, breath, mind, body, ego and senses. It is one, pure awareness and joy, free from birth and ruin, and it lights up the body without needing light. Take the body and the rest to be the Self no more, because that mistake gives rise to passion and hatred, and these lead to faulty acts and rebirth. Himavān asks how hatred can be given up when people do harm. Pārvatī says to ask who is harmed. The body is made of the five elements and left behind, and the Self cannot be burned, cut or killed. Hatred is the root of mental pain and blocks freedom, so drop it. Himavān then asks who feels sorrow if neither body nor Self is touched. She says the living self is bewildered by her māyā, takes up the senses and mind, and so takes pleasure and pain as its own, like a clear crystal that looks red beside a red flower. Acts made of merit and fault give pleasure and pain, and even heaven earned by merit is lost. So keep the company of the good, practise knowledge, and leave attachment.

The body is born of acts, and acts are held to be of two kinds, fault and merit, O king of kings. It comes according to the share of the two.

Pleasure and pain come to the embodied unavoidably, like day and night. Even one who wishes for heaven and does meritorious acts by the rules, having reached heaven, soon falls again, impelled by his acts.

Therefore let the discerning one keep the company of the good, be given to the practice of knowledge, free from attachment, and wish for the highest happiness.
