Chapter Three · The Teaching of the Yoga of Brahman · Verses 1–51

Chapter 17 of the Mahābhāgavata, the third chapter of the Pārvatī Gītā. Himavān asks how the body comes about, since it is the cause of sorrow, and how a living self whose merit has run out is born again. Pārvatī describes the body as made of the five elements, with earth the chief. She names four kinds of birth: from an egg, from sweat, from a shoot and from a womb. She then follows a human life step by step. The living self falls to earth with mist, enters grain, is eaten, becomes seed, and enters a mother's womb at the right time. She describes the months of growth. In the womb the child remembers its past acts, suffers, and promises to worship the Goddess if it is freed. It is born through the passage, forgets everything through her māyā, grows, speaks, becomes young, and goes on acting for the sake of the body. Life runs out every moment like water from a swinging leaf, and death seizes it suddenly like a snake taking a frog. Pleasure from the senses is like a dream. She ends: drop worldly pleasure, seek lasting lordship, give yourself to worship, and take yourself to be apart from the body. If you want freedom from the sorrow of saṃsāra, worship me with devotion.

Father, if you wish for release from the sorrow of saṃsāra, then worship me, who am Brahman in form, with devotion and a steady mind.
