A listener writes that for doing japa of the Panchakshari with the Pranava it has been said that the utterance of the Pranava should be done only by sannyasis, and that therefore they should do only the Panchakshari. The speaker agrees: for doing japa of the Shadakshari, only if some guru gives diksha and then, having given diksha and upadesh, commands you to do the japa, should you use the Shadakshari. Otherwise, if you are not initiated, do japa only of the Panchakshari — and in that too, if you do not wear the yajnopavit, do the japa with namah placed afterwards.
From Shadakshari to Dashakshari the letters and their deities shift place inside the yantra
In Shadakshari, that is japa with the pranava, the form of the yantra stays the same, but the place of the mantra's letters within the yantra, and the place of the deity connected with each letter, changes. Going on to Saptakshari, Ashtakshari, Navakshar, Dashakshari and mantras such as Om Bhagavate Rudraya, the form of the yantra also gradually changes and so does the place of the deities.
