As these thoughts rose in his mind, Māyā spread over him, sent by Rāma. That Māyā is not painful to him as it is to other creatures. He tells Garuḍa the other reason. Knowledge is unbroken and only one in the husband of Sītā; all moving and unmoving beings are under Māyā's power. If all had the same knowledge, how would God and the soul differ? The soul is proud and under Māyā; Māyā, the home of the qualities, is under God. The soul depends on another; the Lord is free. Souls are many; the husband of Śrī is one. The difference is false, though made by Māyā, and it cannot be removed without Hari. The dohās say that one who wants freedom without worshipping Rāma is a wise man yet like a beast without tail or horns, and that the dark does not leave at night even with the sixteen-phase moon and all the stars, unless the sun comes.मन में यह विचार आते ही रघुपति की प्रेरणा से माया फैल गई। वह माया उन्हें दुखदायी नहीं हुई, जैसी वह और जीवों के लिए संसार रचती है। भुशुंडि गरुड़ को दूसरा कारण बताते हैं। सीतापति का ज्ञान अखंड और एक है; चर-अचर सब जीव माया के वश हैं। यदि सबको एक-सा ज्ञान रहता तो ईश्वर और जीव का भेद कैसे कहते? जीव अभिमानी है और माया के वश है; माया गुणों की खान है और ईश्वर के वश है। जीव पराधीन है, भगवान स्वाधीन हैं; जीव अनेक हैं, श्रीपति एक हैं। यह भेद यद्यपि माया का रचा हुआ झूठा है, पर हरि के बिना करोड़ों उपाय करने पर भी नहीं जाता। दोहों में कहा गया है कि जो रामचंद्र के भजन के बिना मोक्ष चाहता है, वह ज्ञानी होकर भी बिना पूँछ-सींग का पशु है, और सोलह कलाओं वाला चन्द्रमा तथा सब तारे उगे हों, पर सूर्य के बिना रात नहीं जाती।

The soul is dependent, the Lord is free. Souls are many, the husband of Śrī is one. Though the difference is false and made by Māyā, it will not go without Hari, even by a million efforts.

The full moon with all its sixteen phases may rise, with the whole host of stars, and a forest fire may be set on all the hills, yet without the sun the night does not go.
