Chapter 79 · The arm that follows · Verses 1–

In the same way, without worship of Hari the troubles of souls do not end. Hari's servant is not touched by ignorance; knowledge comes to him only at the Lord's urging. So the servant's confusion does not destroy him, and the difference of devotion grows. Seeing the crow confused, Rāma laughed, and no one knew the secret of that sport, not his brothers, mother or father. He ran to catch the crow, with a dark body and red hands and feet. Bhuśuṇḍi fled, and Rāma stretched out his arm to seize him. As far as he flew, he saw Hari's arm just beside him. The dohās tell how he went as far as Brahmaloka, looking back to see the arm two fingers away, and even beyond the sevenfold coverings of the universe, where he found the arm again and became distraught.

In the same way, king of birds, without worship of Hari the troubles of souls do not end. Ignorance does not touch a servant of Hari; knowledge comes to him by the Lord's urging.

Verse 2

So a servant is not destroyed, and the difference of devotion grows, best of birds. Seeing me bewildered by confusion, Rāma laughed; hear what then happened.

Verse 3

No one knew the secret of that sport, not his brothers, not his mother or father. He ran to catch me on his knees and hands, his body dark and his hands and feet red.

Then I fled, serpent-eater, and Rāma stretched out his arm to catch me. The farther I flew away through the sky, the more I saw Hari's arm beside me.

I went as far as Brahmaloka, and looking back as I flew, I saw the distance between me and Rāma's arm was only two fingers, friend.

Piercing the seven coverings, as far as my power of flight went, I saw the Lord's arm there too, and I was seized by distress again.
