Chapter 99 · Trijaṭā comforts Sītā · Verses 1–

That night Trijaṭā goes to Sītā and tells her all. Hearing that the enemy's heads and arms grow again, great fear rises in Sītā's heart. Her face is dim and worry rises; she asks Trijaṭā how the giver of pain to the world will die. Even with heads cut by Raghupati's arrows he does not die; fate does all contrary things. It is her ill fortune that keeps him alive, who has parted her from Hari's lotus feet. The same fate that made the false golden deer, that made her say harsh words to Lakṣmaṇa, is still angry with her. The heavy poisoned arrow of Raghupati's separation hits again and again; if even so the Creator keeps her alive, he and no other can keep him alive. She laments in many ways, remembering the Lord of mercy. Trijaṭā says: the enemy of the gods dies when an arrow strikes his heart, but the Lord does not strike his heart because Vaidehī lives in it. She lives in his heart, and Jānakī's dwelling is in Rāma's heart, and in Rāma's belly are many worlds; any arrow that strikes would destroy all. Sītā is glad and sad at the words, and Trijaṭā says: he will die in this way; cast off the great doubt. When his heads are cut he will be distressed and her meditation will break; then Rāma, the wise, will kill Rāvaṇa in the heart.

'In his heart lives Jānakī, and in Jānakī's heart is my dwelling, and in my belly are many worlds, so when any arrow strikes, all of them will be destroyed.' Hearing these words, Sītā felt both joy and grief in her heart, and Trijaṭā said again, 'Listen, fair one: the enemy will die in this way. Give up your great doubt.

Explanation

The first words are the Lord's own reasoning, as Trijaṭā relays it: an arrow in Rāvaṇa's heart would reach Sītā, then himself, and so all the worlds he holds.

Verse
