Chapter 100·Sītā's night and Rāvaṇa's return·Verses 1–
Trijaṭā comforts her at length and goes home. Remembering Rāma's nature, Vaidehī feels the great pain of separation. She blames the night and the moon in many ways; the night passes like an age and does not end. Jānakī, in grief for Rāma, laments much in her mind. When the burning in her heart grows great, her left eye and arm twitch; thinking of the omen, she takes heart: now the kind Raghubīra will meet her. Here, at midnight, Rāvaṇa wakes and grows angry with his charioteer: 'Fool, you got me out of the battlefield; shame on you, base, dull one.' The charioteer takes his feet and explains in many ways. At daybreak Rāvaṇa climbs the chariot and rushes out again. Hearing of his coming, the monkey host is stirred; wherever they can they tear up hills and trees and run with gnashing teeth, great warriors. The fearsome monkeys and bears, with mountains in their hands, strike in great anger and the night-rangers flee. The strong monkeys scatter his army and surround Rāvaṇa again, beating him with slaps and tearing his body with nails. Seeing the great monkeys so strong, Rāvaṇa thinks to vanish and spread illusion in a moment.
