रावण की माया
When Rāvaṇa spreads his deception, fierce creatures appear: vetālas, ghosts and pisācas holding bows and iron arrows; yoginīs with swords and a human skull in one hand, who drink fresh blood and dance and sing. 'Seize, kill,' they cry in a dreadful voice that fills all sides, and run with open mouths to eat; the monkeys begin to flee. Wherever they go they see fire burning, and the bewildered monkeys and bears are showered with sand. Having tired the monkeys everywhere, the ten-headed one roars again, and with Lakṣmaṇa and the king of monkeys all the heroes become senseless. 'Alas Rāma, alas Raghunātha,' cry the warriors, wringing their hands. Having broken all their strength in this way, he plays his trick again. He shows many Hanumāns, who run with stones, surround Rāma and make a ring round him from all sides, crying 'Kill, seize, let him not go,' gnashing teeth and lifting tails. On the ten directions their tails shine, and in the middle is the king of Kosala. In the middle stands Rāma, lovely and dark of body, as if many rainbows shone over a tall tamāla tree. Seeing the Lord, the gods are both glad and sad and cry 'Victory'; Raghubīra, angry, with one arrow, in a moment dispels the illusion. The illusion gone, the monkeys and bears are glad, take hills and trees, and turn back; Rāma looses his arrows and again the arms and heads of Rāvaṇa fall to the ground. The many ages' deeds of Rāma and Rāvaṇa in the battle, which even a hundred Śeṣas, Sarasvatīs, the Vedas and poets sing, they cannot find the end of. Tulasīdāsa, dull-minded, has told a few of the qualities of those deeds, as a fly flies in the sky according to its own strength. The heads and arms were cut many times, yet the warrior king of Laṅkā did not die; the Lord was playing, and the gods, siddhas and sages were distressed to see the pain.जब रावण ने पाखंड रचा, तब प्रचंड जीव प्रकट हुए: बेताल, भूत और पिशाच धनुष और नाराच हाथ में लिए। योगिनियाँ हाथ में तलवार और एक हाथ में मनुष्य का कपाल लिए ताजा रक्त पीकर नाचती और बहुत गाती हैं। 'पकड़ो, मारो' की घोर ध्वनि चारों ओर भर गई, और वे मुँह फाड़कर खाने को दौड़ते हैं, तब वानर भागने लगे। जहाँ-जहाँ भागते हैं, वहाँ आग जलती देखते हैं; वानर-भालू व्याकुल हो गए और फिर उन पर बालू बरसने लगी। जहाँ-तहाँ वानरों को थका कर रावण फिर गर्जा, और लक्ष्मण तथा वानरराज सहित सब वीर अचेत हो गए। 'हा राम, हा रघुनाथ' कहकर योद्धा हाथ मलते हैं। इस प्रकार सब बल तोड़कर उसने फिर कपट किया। उसने बहुत से हनुमान प्रकट किए, जो पत्थर लिए दौड़े और राम को चारों ओर से झुंड बनाकर घेर लिया। 'मारो, पकड़ो, जाने न पाए' कहते हुए वे दाँत किटकिटाते और पूँछ उठाते हैं। दसों दिशाओं में पूँछें शोभित हैं, और उनके बीच में कोसल के राजा हैं। बीच में कोसलराज सुंदर श्याम शरीर की शोभा पाते हैं, मानो ऊँचे तमाल पर अनेक इन्द्रधनुष हों। प्रभु को देखकर देवता हर्ष और विषाद मन में लिए 'जय, जय, जय' कहते हैं; रघुवीर ने क्रोध करके एक ही बाण से क्षण भर में माया हर ली। माया के दूर होने पर वानर-भालू हर्षित हुए, पेड़ और पर्वत लेकर सब लौटे; राम ने बाणों का समूह छोड़ा और रावण की भुजाएँ और सिर फिर धरती पर गिर पड़े। श्रीराम और रावण के युद्ध के अनेक कल्पों के चरित को, जिन्हें सौ शेष, सरस्वती, वेद और कवि गाते हैं, वे भी पार नहीं पाते। जड़मति तुलसीदास ने उनके कुछ गुण कहे, जैसे मक्खी अपने बल के अनुसार आकाश में उड़ती है। कई बार सिर और भुजाएँ काटे गए, फिर भी वीर लंकेश नहीं मरा; प्रभु खेल रहे थे, और देवता, सिद्ध और मुनि क्लेश देखकर व्याकुल थे।

वानर जहाँ भाग जाते, वहाँ आग जलती देखते। वानर और भालू व्याकुल हो गए, और फिर उन पर बालू बरसने लगी।
Wherever the monkeys ran, they saw fire burning there. The monkeys and bears were bewildered, and then sand began to rain on them.

Having tired the monkeys everywhere, the ten-headed one roared again. With Lakṣmaṇa and the king of monkeys, all the heroes became senseless.

५5हा राम हा रघुनाथ। कहि सुभट मीजहिं हाथ ॥एहि बिधि सकल बल तोरि। तेहिं कीन्ह कपट बहोरि ॥ ६ ॥

'मारो, पकड़ो, जाने न पाए,' कहते हुए वे दाँत किटकिटाते और पूँछ उठाते थे। दसों दिशाओं में पूँछें शोभित थीं, और उनके बीच में कोसल के राजा थे।
'Kill, seize; let him not get away,' they said, gnashing their teeth and raising their tails. Their tails shone in all ten directions, and in the middle was the king of Kosala.

बीच में कोसलराज सुंदर श्याम शरीर की शोभा पाते थे, मानो ऊँचे तमाल पर अनेक इन्द्रधनुष हों। प्रभु को देखकर देवता हृदय में हर्ष और विषाद लिए 'जय, जय, जय' कहते थे। रघुवीर ने क्रोध करके एक ही बाण से क्षण भर में माया हर ली।
In the middle stood the lord of Kosala, shining with a lovely dark body, as if many rainbows were shining over a tall tamāla tree. Seeing the Lord, the gods, with joy and sorrow in their hearts, cried 'Victory, victory, victory.' Raghubīra, angry, with a single arrow, took away the illusion in a moment.

When the illusion was gone, the monkeys and bears rejoiced and all turned back, taking hills and trees. Rāma loosed a shower of arrows, and Rāvaṇa's arms and heads fell again to the ground. The deeds of Śrī Rāma and Rāvaṇa in battle, through many ages, which a hundred Śeṣas, Sarasvatī, the Vedas and poets sing, even they cannot find the end of.
