Chapter 102·The nectar in the navel·Verses 1–
Heads keep growing as they are cut, like greed growing with each gain. The enemy does not die, and Rāma's labour is great; he looks at Vibhīṣaṇa. Umā, he at whose wish Death himself dies tests his servant's love. Vibhīṣaṇa says: 'Listen, all-knowing lord of all that moves and stands, protector of the humble, giver of joy to gods and sages: nectar lies in his navel-pool, and by that, Lord, Rāvaṇa lives.' Hearing the words of Vibhīṣaṇa, the merciful one gladly takes up a fierce arrow. Then many evil omens appear: donkeys, jackals and many dogs weep; birds cry in distress; comets rise here and there; the ten directions burn; there is an eclipse of the sun out of season; Mandodarī's heart trembles greatly; images shed tears. Images weep, thunderbolts fall, a fierce wind blows, the earth shakes, clouds rain blood, hair and dust; who could tell all the ill omens? Seeing the many portents in the sky, the gods are distressed and cry 'Victory, victory.' Knowing the gods afraid, the merciful Raghupati set arrow to bow. Drawing the bow to his ear, he loosed thirty-one arrows, and Raghunāyaka's shafts went like the serpent-kings of Death.

As the heads were cut, they grew in number, as greed grows with every gain. The enemy did not die and Rāma's labour grew great; then Rāma looked at Vibhīṣaṇa.
