Chapter 86 · Rāma arms himself · Verses 1–

As Rāvaṇa goes, many fearful omens occur: vultures settle on heads. In the power of Death he heeds no one and orders the war-drums sounded. The endless night-ranger host moves out with elephants, chariots, foot and riders, and the wicked ones rush on the Lord like a swarm of moths at a flame. The gods pray that this wretch has given them cruel trouble, and that Rāma should not keep playing with him now, for Vaidehī is very distressed. Hearing this, the Lord smiles, rises, and sets his arrows in order. He binds his matted locks firmly on his head, with flowers woven in. His eyes are red, his body dark like a cloud, delighting the eyes of all the worlds. He ties the quiver at his waist and takes the hard Śārṅga bow in his hand. When he turned the bow and arrows in his hand, the universe, the elephants of the quarters, the tortoise, the serpent, the earth, the seas and the mountains all shook. Seeing his beauty, the gods rain flowers and cry, 'Victory, victory to the sea of mercy, home of beauty, strength and virtue.'

The lovely quiver, the home of arrows, was tied at the Lord's waist; his arms were strong and shapely, and on his chest was the Brahmin's footprint. Tulasīdāsa says, when the Lord began to turn arrow and bow in his hands, the universe, the elephants of the quarters, the tortoise, the serpent, the earth, the seas and the mountains all shook.

Explanation

The mark on the chest is the footprint of the sage Bhṛgu, which Viṣṇu bears as a sign.

Seeing his beauty, the gods gladly rained down countless flowers: 'Victory, victory, victory to the sea of mercy, home of beauty, strength and virtue!'
