Chapter 87 · The river of blood · Verses 1–

Meanwhile the dense night-ranger host comes up, and the monkey warriors go to meet it, like the clouds massed at the end of time. Swords and blades flash like lightning in all ten directions, and elephants, chariots and horses make harsh cries like fearful clouds. The monkeys' tails fill the sky like rainbows; dust rises like rain-streams and showers of arrows fall like downpours. Both sides hurl mountains, as if thunderbolts fell again and again. Raghupati in anger sends a rain of arrows, and the night-rangers are wounded. Struck, the heroes scream and reel to the ground. Blood flows as if from mountains in great streams, a fearful river that cowards dread. That impure river flows on, its two banks the armies, its sand the chariots, its whirlpools the wheels; its creatures are elephants, foot-soldiers, horses and donkeys, its waves the bows, arrows, spears, spears and snakes, and its tortoises the shields. Warriors fall like trees on its banks, their marrow its foam, and cowards fear it while the brave are at ease.

Struck by the arrows, heroes screamed, reeled and fell to the ground here and there. Blood flowed as if from mountains in great streams: a fearful river of blood that terrified the cowardly.

A fearful river of blood, utterly impure, began to flow. Its two banks were the two armies, its sand the chariots, its whirlpools the wheels. Its creatures were elephants, foot-soldiers, horses, donkeys and vehicles of many kinds, beyond counting; its waves were arrows, spears, javelins, snakes and bows, and its many tortoises the shields.
