Chapter 88 · The spirits feast on the field · Verses 1–

Ghosts, pisācas, vetālas and other fearful spirits bathe in the river of blood; crows and kites carry off arms and snatch them from each other. A spirit jokes that the wicked need not be so poor as to eat what is only fit for the poor. Wounded warriors lie moaning on the bank, like half-drowned men, and vultures drag out intestines, as if patiently angling. Many bodies float, with birds riding them as if playing boats on a river. Female spirits fill skulls with blood; the wives of ghosts dance in the sky; skulls of warriors are used as clappers, and Cāmuṇḍā sings in many ways. Jackals tear and gorge; headless trunks wander by the crore, and fallen heads cry out 'Victory, victory'. Heads and trunks shout victory; headless trunks run; skulls fight with spoons and swords; the fallen heroes crush other heroes. Monkeys and night-rangers crush each other, proud with Rāma's strength; heroes lie in the field of battle, killed by Rāma's arrows. Rāvaṇa thinks in his heart that the night-rangers are destroyed and that he alone faces many monkeys and bears, so he will make great illusion.

One said, 'Even so, fools, your poverty does not go.' Wounded warriors fell on the bank, groaning, as if half-drowned here and there.

Vultures dragged out the intestines on the bank, as if patiently fishing with lines. Many warriors floated along with birds riding on them, as if playing boats on the river.

Packs of jackals tore and gnawed, ate, howled, were sated and snarled. Crores of headless trunks wandered about, and heads fallen on the ground called out, 'Victory, victory!'

Heads and trunks called out victory; fierce headless trunks ran about; fighters tangled with skulls and swords, and heroes brought other heroes down. Monkeys and night-rangers crushed one another, proud with Rāma's strength. In the field of battle the heroes lay sleeping, struck down by Rāma's arrows.

Rāvaṇa thought in his heart: the night-rangers are destroyed. I am alone and the monkeys and bears are many; I will make endless illusion.
