Chapter 41·The assault on the walls·Verses 1–
The demons look like clouds sitting on the peaks of Meru as they stand on the battlements. Drums and war trumpets sound, and the warriors' hearts rise, while the cowards' hearts split. The demons see the monkey hosts and the huge bear warriors, who run on, caring nothing for steep or rough ground and breaking mountains to make paths. Crores of warriors gnash, roar and bite their lips. On one side is Rāvaṇa, on the other Rāma, and the battle begins with cries of victory. The demons push down heaps of rock and the monkeys leap, catch them and throw them back. The chhand tells how the bears and monkeys hurl huge pieces of hill at the fort, snatch demons by the feet and dash them down, and climb up into the palaces singing Rāma's glory. In the dohā each monkey seizes a demon and leaps away, so that he is above and the warrior is below, falling to the ground.

How they shone on the walls and battlements, as if clouds sat on the peaks of Meru. War drums and kettledrums sounded, and hearing them, the warriors' hearts were eager.

Trumpets and horns sounded without number, and hearing them cowards' hearts split. They went and saw the crowds of monkeys, the huge-bodied bear warriors.

On that side is Rāvaṇa, on this side the cry is Rāma's. 'Victory, victory!' and the fight begins. The demons push down heaps of hill-tops, and the monkeys leap, catch them and throw them back.

The fierce bears and monkeys lift huge pieces of hill and throw them at the fort. They rush in, seize feet and dash the demons on the ground, run off and challenge them again. Very nimble and young, in their glory they leap up, climb and climb into the fort. The bears and monkeys climbed into the palaces here and there and sang Rāma's fame.
