Chapter 42 · The demons break · Verses 1–

By Rāma's glory the mighty bands of monkeys crush the demon warriors, then climb the fort in many places, crying victory to Raghubīra. The demons flee like clouds before a strong wind. A great cry of woe goes up in the city, with children and distressed women weeping. They all curse Rāvaṇa for calling death to himself. Rāvaṇa hears that his own army has broken and turns the warriors back in anger. He says that he will kill with a terrible sword whoever he hears turned his back in battle: they have eaten all his wealth and enjoyed many pleasures, and now life is dear on the field? Hearing his fierce words, all are afraid. Ashamed, they go out angry, since death facing the enemy is a hero's glory, and so they give up love of life. In the dohā the warriors with many weapons fight with loud challenges, and the bears and monkeys are troubled by clubs and tridents.
