Chapter 40·The demons climb the walls·Verses 1–
A great uproar rises in Laṅkā, and the proud Rāvaṇa hears it. He laughs and says the monkeys have come driven by Time and his demons are hungry. With a loud laugh he sends all the warriors in four directions to catch and eat the bears and monkeys, as good as providing food at home. Śiva tells Umā that Rāvaṇa's pride is like the lapwing sleeping on its back, trusting its legs to hold up the sky. The demons ask leave and set out with spears, lances, javelins, maces, axes, tridents, swords, clubs and hill-pieces. They run as flesh-eating birds run to a heap of red stones, not thinking of the pain of broken beaks. The dohā says crores of steady warriors with many weapons, bows and arrows climb on to the walls and battlements.

'All you brave warriors, go in the four directions, catch the bears and monkeys and eat them all.' Umā, Rāvaṇa has this same pride as the lapwing bird that sleeps on its back.

As foolish flesh-eating birds run on seeing a heap of red stones, and do not think of the pain of broken beaks, so these man-eaters ran, knowing nothing.
