Seeing that it is evening, Rāvaṇa goes home in distress, and Mandodarī again advises him. She tells him to give up his bad judgement, for fighting Raghupati does not suit him. Rāma's younger brother drew a small line, and Rāvaṇa could not cross even that. She asks how he can win against one whose messenger crossed the sea in play, killed the guards, wrecked the forest and killed Akṣa before his eyes, and burned the whole city to ash. She asks where his strength and pride were then. She tells him not to boast falsely and not to think of Raghupati as a king, but as the incomparable lord of all that moves and does not move. Mārīca knew Rāma's arrows and he did not listen. In Janaka's court there were countless kings, Rāvaṇa among them, but Rāma broke the bow and married Jānakī. Indra's son knows Rāma's small strength, who spared his life but destroyed his eye. And he has seen what happened to Śūrpaṇakhā, yet feels no shame.
