Chapter 29·The writing on the skull·Verses 1–
Rāvaṇa says that when he saw his skulls burning, he saw the marks Brahmā had written on his forehead, saying he would die by the hand of a man. He laughed, thinking Brahmā's words untrue. He also says that he has no fear, for Brahmā wrote that in his old age and confusion. Aṅgada answers that no one in the world is as modest as Rāvaṇa, who never praises his own virtues with his own mouth. The story of the heads and the hill stayed in his mind, so he told it twenty times. He says Rāvaṇa kept that strength hidden and won over Sahasrabāhu, Bali and Vālī, and that Rāvaṇa should finish his story. Does cutting off heads make a hero? A conjurer who cuts his whole body with his own hands is not called a hero. Moths burn from delusion and donkeys carry loads, but none of them is called a hero.

'When I saw my skulls burning, I saw the marks Brahmā wrote on my forehead. They said my death would come from the hand of a man. I laughed, knowing Brahmā's words untrue.
Verse 2

I understand that in my mind, and I feel no fear. Brahmā wrote it in his old age, in confusion. Fool, again and again, shameless one, you tell me before my face of other men's strength.'
Verse 3

Aṅgada said, 'Rāvaṇa, there is no one in the world as modest as you. Your nature is modest, and you never praise your own virtues with your own mouth.
Verse 4

The story of the heads and the hill stayed in my mind, so you have told it twenty times. You hid that strength of arm in your heart, and so you beat Sahasrabāhu, Bali and Vālī!
