सीता की अग्नि-परीक्षा
Sītā, taking the Lord's words on her head, speaks with a mind, deed and word pure: 'Lakṣmaṇa, be the helper in dharma; quickly make the fire appear.' Hearing Sītā's words, steeped in separation, discernment and law, Lakṣmaṇa, with both hands joined and eyes full, cannot say anything to the Lord. Seeing Rāma's wish, he runs and lights the fire, bringing much wood. Seeing the fire blaze strongly, Vaidehī is glad at heart and has no fear. She says: if in mind, word and deed no way but Raghubīra is in my heart, then let the fire, which knows the way of all, be like sandal paste to me. Remembering the Lord, Maithilī entered the fire like sandalwood. Her love for his feet is utterly pure, praised by Śiva and Kosala's lord. Her reflection and the common blemish burned in the great fire; no one saw the Lord's play, but the gods, siddhas and sages in the sky saw it plainly. Then Fire took bodily form, took Śrī by the hand, who is known to be true by the Vedas and the world, as the ocean of milk gave Indirā, and handed her to Rāma. She sits at Rāma's left, very lovely, as if a bud of a golden lotus were beside a fresh blue lotus. The gods rain flowers gladly, the drums sound in the sky, the Kinnaras and the wives of the gods sing and dance on airships. Seeing the Lord together with Janaka's daughter, in boundless beauty, the bears and monkeys rejoice: 'Victory to Raghupati, essence of joy.'सीता प्रभु के वचन सिर पर धरकर मन, कर्म और वचन से पवित्र वाणी में बोलीं, 'लक्ष्मण, तुम धर्म के नेगी बनो और शीघ्र अग्नि प्रकट करो।' विरह, विवेक, धर्म और नीति से सनी सीता की वाणी सुनकर लक्ष्मण की आँखों में जल भर आया, वे दोनों हाथ जोड़े रहे और प्रभु से कुछ कह न सके। राम का रुख देखकर वे दौड़े, अग्नि प्रकट की और बहुत लकड़ी लाए। प्रबल अग्नि देखकर वैदेही के हृदय में हर्ष हुआ, उन्हें कुछ भय नहीं था। वे बोलीं, 'यदि मन, वचन और कर्म से मेरे हृदय में रघुवीर को छोड़कर कोई और गति नहीं है, तो सबकी गति जानने वाली अग्नि मेरे लिए चंदन के समान हो जाए।' प्रभु का स्मरण करके मैथिली ने चंदन के समान अग्नि में प्रवेश किया। उनकी चरणों में प्रीति अत्यन्त निर्मल है, जिसे शिव और कोसलपति भी वंदना करते हैं। उनका प्रतिबिंब और लौकिक कलंक प्रचंड अग्नि में जल गए; प्रभु की लीला किसी ने नहीं जानी, पर आकाश में देवता, सिद्ध और मुनि साफ देखते रहे। फिर अग्नि ने शरीर धारण करके श्री को हाथ पकड़कर, जो सत्य जानी जाती हैं, वेद और जगत में प्रसिद्ध हैं, राम को सौंप दिया, जैसे क्षीरसागर ने इन्दिरा को लाकर विष्णु को समर्पित किया था। वे राम के बाएँ भाग में अत्यन्त सुंदर शोभा पाती हैं, मानो नए नीले कमल के पास सोने के कमल की कली हो। देवता हर्षित होकर फूल बरसाते हैं, आकाश में नगाड़े बजते हैं, किन्नर गाते हैं और देवांगनाएँ विमानों पर चढ़ी नाचती हैं। जानकी समेत प्रभु की अमित अपार शोभा देखकर भालू-वानर हर्षित हुए और 'सुख के सार रघुपति की जय' पुकारने लगे।

राम का रुख देखकर लक्ष्मण दौड़े, अग्नि प्रकट की और बहुत लकड़ी लाए। प्रबल अग्नि देखकर वैदेही के हृदय में हर्ष हुआ, उन्हें कुछ भी भय नहीं था।
Seeing Rāma's wish, Lakṣmaṇa ran, lit the fire and brought much wood. Seeing the fire strong, Vaidehī was glad at heart, with not the least fear.

'यदि मन, वचन और कर्म से मेरे हृदय में रघुवीर को छोड़कर कोई और गति नहीं है, तो सबकी गति जानने वाली अग्नि मेरे लिए चंदन के समान हो जाए।'
'If in mind, word and deed there is no other way in my heart but Raghubīra, then let the fire, which knows the way of all, be like sandal to me.'

Remembering the Lord, Maithilī entered the fire as if it were sandal. Her love for his feet is wholly pure, praised by Śiva and the lord of Kosala. Her reflection and the common blemish burned in the fierce fire. No one saw the Lord's play; the gods, siddhas and sages in the sky saw it clearly.
Explanationव्याख्या
'प्रतिबिंब' वह छाया-सीता है जो लंका गई थी; जो जलता है वह यह छाया और उस पर लगा लौकिक कलंक है, स्वयं सीता नहीं।
The 'reflection' is the image of Sītā that was taken to Laṅkā; what burns is that image and the worldly stain laid on her, not Sītā herself.

Fire took bodily form and, taking by the hand Śrī, known as true to the Vedas and the world, gave her to Rāma, as the ocean of milk gave Indirā. She shines at Rāma's left side, very lovely, as if a golden lotus bud were beside a fresh blue lotus.
