With Raghupati's leave Mātali bows at his feet and goes. The ever self-seeking gods now come and speak as if devoted to the highest truth: 'Friend of the lowly, compassionate Rāma, you have been kind to the gods. This wicked, lustful enemy of the world went his own way because of his own sins. You are the same Brahman, imperishable, always of one flavour, naturally indifferent, without parts or qualities, unborn, sinless, free of ailment, unconquered, with unfailing power, compassionate. As fish, tortoise, boar, Man-Lion, dwarf and Paraśurāma you took form; whenever the gods were in pain you took many bodies and destroyed it. This wicked, impure enemy of the gods, full of desire, greed and pride, and given to anger, a base crest-jewel, got your feet, and this fills us with wonder. We gods are the highest rank, but busy with our own gain we forgot devotion to you; we are always caught in the stream of life. Now, Lord, save us; we take refuge in you.' As fish, tortoise, boar, Man-Lion, dwarf and Paraśurāma you took bodies. Whenever, Lord, the gods suffered, you took many forms and destroyed their pain.
