Seeing her husband's head, Mandodarī faints and falls to the ground. The crowd of young women rise weeping, lift her and bring her to Rāvaṇa. Seeing their lord's state they cry out, hair loosened and bodies forgotten, beating their breasts and weeping as they recall his glory. They say that his strength made the earth shake, that fire, moon and sun lost their brightness before him, that Śeṣa and the tortoise could not bear his weight, and that body now lies on the earth covered in dust. Varuṇa, Kubera, Indra and Vāyu could not stand before him in battle; he conquered Death and Yama by the strength of his arms, and today he lies like one without a protector. His fame and the strength of his sons and kin are known to the world; yet turned from Rāma, such is his state, and no one is left in his family to weep for him. All the creation was under his control; the guardians of the quarters bowed their heads in fear daily; now jackals eat his head and arms; it is not unfit for one turned from Rāma. Mandodarī says that in the power of Death her husband would not listen to her; he took the Lord of all things moving and still to be a man. 'You took him for a man, though he is Hari himself, fire to the forest of the demons, whom Śiva and Brahmā and the gods bow to, and you did not worship the merciful one, my husband. From birth you delighted in harming others, and your body was a mass of sin; yet he gave you his own abode. I bow to Rāma, the Brahman free of sickness.' 'नाथ, आपके बल से धरती नित डोलती थी; अग्नि, चन्द्रमा और सूर्य आपके सामने तेज-हीन थे। जिस शरीर का भार शेष और कच्छप न सह सकते थे, वही धूल से भरा धरती पर पड़ा है।
'Lord, by your strength the earth shook daily; fire, moon and sun were dim before you. Śeṣa and the tortoise could not bear the weight of that body, and it lies on the ground full of dust.

आपकी प्रभुता जगत में प्रसिद्ध है; पुत्रों और परिवार का बल कहा नहीं जा सकता। राम से विमुख होने पर आपकी यह दशा हुई कि कुल में कोई रोने वाला भी नहीं रहा।
Your lordship is known to all the world; the strength of your sons and kin cannot be told. Turned away from Rāma, such is your state: no one is left in your family to weep for you.

The whole creation of the Maker was in your power; the guardians of the quarters, afraid, bowed their heads daily. Now jackals eat your head and arms; for one turned from Rāma this is not unfitting.'
