Sugrīva tells Rāma why he hides in the forest. He and his brother Vālī loved each other until the demon Māyāvī came to their city. Vālī chased him into a cave and told Sugrīva to wait a fortnight. After a month blood flowed out of the cave, and Sugrīva shut it with a boulder and fled. The ministers made him king. Vālī came back alive, took his kingdom and his wife, and drove him out. Hearing this, Rāma swears to kill Vālī with a single arrow.
