The two make friends with nothing held back. Lakṣmaṇa tells Rāma's story, and Sugrīva weeps and promises that Sītā will be found. He tells how, as he sat with his ministers, he saw a woman being carried through the sky, crying 'Rāma, Rāma', and how she dropped her cloth. Rāma asked for it, held it to his chest and grieved. Sugrīva comforts him and promises service, and Rāma asks why he lives in the forest.दोनों बिना कुछ छिपाए मित्र बन जाते हैं। लक्ष्मण राम की सारी कथा सुनाते हैं, और सुग्रीव आँखों में आँसू भरकर कहता है कि सीता जी मिलेंगी। वह बताता है कि एक बार मंत्रियों के साथ बैठे हुए उसने एक स्त्री को आकाश-मार्ग से ले जाते देखा जो 'राम, राम' पुकार रही थी और जिसने अपना वस्त्र गिरा दिया। राम ने वह माँगा, छाती से लगाया और बहुत दुखी हुए। सुग्रीव उन्हें धीरज देता है और सेवा का वचन देता है, तब राम पूछते हैं कि तुम वन में क्यों रहते हो।
