Chapter Seventeen·The autumn pond and sky·Verses 1–
Rāma finishes his description of autumn. Fish in deep water are happy, like one who takes refuge in Hari. A pond full of lotuses is like the formless Brahman taking form. The chakravāka is sad at night, like a wicked man who sees another's wealth. The chātaka bird is thirsty, like one who hates Śaṅkara finding no peace. The moon at night takes away the heat of the day, like the sight of a saint taking away sin. Gnats are gone, like a family ruined by wronging brahmins, and the earth is clear of creatures, like doubt vanishing before a true guru.

Fish in deep water are happy, as one who takes refuge in Hari meets no trouble at all. How lovely the pond is with its lotuses in bloom — like the formless Brahman when it takes a form.
Verse 2

Bees hum with an unmatched sound and lovely birds call in many tones. The chakravāka is sad at heart when it sees the night, as a wicked man is when he sees another's wealth.
Verse 3

The chātaka bird, very thirsty, keeps crying out, as one who hates Śaṅkara finds no happiness. The moon at night takes away the heat of autumn, as the sight of a saint takes away sin.

Flocks of chakora birds gaze at the moon, as devotees gaze at Hari when they have found him. Gnats and mosquitoes are gone for fear of the cold, as a family is destroyed by wronging brahmins.

The earth that was crowded with living things is clear now that autumn has come, as doubts and confusions vanish when one meets a true guru.
