Chapter Eighteen·No news of Sītā; Rāma's anger·Verses 1–
The clear season has come but there is no news of Sītā. Rāma tells Lakṣmaṇa that if he once learned where she is, he would bring her back even from Death. He says Sugrīva has forgotten him now that he has a kingdom, wealth, city and wife, and that he will kill him tomorrow with the arrow that killed Vālī. The story-teller reminds Umā that one by whose grace pride and delusion fall away cannot truly be angry. Lakṣmaṇa strings his bow, and Rāma tells him to frighten Sugrīva but bring him back as a friend.

'The rains are over and the clear season has come, but I have no news of Sītā, brother. If I could once learn how she is, I would beat even Death and bring her back in a moment.

Wherever she is, if she is alive, brother, I will find her and bring her back. Sugrīva has forgotten me too, now that he has his kingdom, treasury, city and wife.

With the arrow that killed Vālī I shall kill that fool tomorrow.' Umā, how could the one by whose grace pride and delusion are shed ever feel anger, even in a dream?

Then Raghupati, the limit of mercy, calmed his brother: 'Brother, frighten him a little, but bring my friend Sugrīva back with you.'
