The rains are over and autumn has come. Rāma shows Lakṣmaṇa the white kāsa grass covering the earth, the roads drying up when the star Agastya rises, the clear water of rivers and ponds, wagtails arriving, the earth free of mud and dust, fish gasping in shrinking water, and a clear sky. Each is matched with a quality of the mind: contentment drying up greed, a saint's heart free of pride, the wise giving up 'mine', a devotee free of hope. The unit ends with kings, ascetics, merchants and beggars setting out on their journeys.

'The rains are gone and autumn has come. Look, Lakṣmaṇa, how lovely it is. Kāsa grass is in flower and covers the whole earth, as if the rainy season had shown its old age.
Verse 2

Agastya has risen and dried up the water on the roads, as contentment dries up greed. Rivers and ponds shine with clear water, like the heart of a saint free of pride and delusion.

Little by little the water of rivers and ponds dries, as the wise give up the sense of 'mine'. Knowing autumn had come, wagtails arrived, like good deeds that show up in due time.

Neither mud nor dust remains, and the earth looks like the work of a king skilled in policy. Fish writhe as the water shrinks, like a foolish householder who has lost his wealth.

The sky without clouds is bright and clean, like a devotee of Hari who has given up all hope. Here and there a little autumn rain falls, as rare as someone who finds devotion to me.

Kings, ascetics, merchants and beggars gladly leave their cities and set out, as devotees of Hari, once they have found him, give up the toil of the four stages of life.
