Chapter Fifteen · More of the rains · Verses 1–

Rāma goes on with his likenesses. Frogs croak like students chanting the Vedas, new leaves are like a seeker gaining discernment, and plants that lose their leaves are like the schemes of the wicked failing under good rule. The earth rich with crops is like the wealth of a giver, fireflies are like a gathering of hypocrites, and burst field-banks and weeding farmers show how freedom spoils some things and wisdom drops delusion. Two closing dohās liken the wind scattering clouds to a bad son ruining a family's dharma, and the changing dark and light of the day to knowledge lost and gained in bad and good company.

The croaking of frogs sounds pleasant in every direction, like groups of young students chanting the Vedas. Many trees put out new leaves, as a seeker's mind brightens when it gains discernment.

Verse 2

The madar and jawāsā plants lost their leaves, as the schemes of the wicked fail under good rule. You cannot find dust anywhere, as anger drives dharma away.

Verse 3

sasi saṃpanna soha mahi kaisī upakārī kai saṃpati jaisī | nisi tama ghana khadyota birājā janu daṃbhinha kara milā samājā ||

The earth, rich with crops, shines like the wealth of a man who does good to others. In the darkness of night the fireflies glitter, like a gathering of hypocrites.

Verse 4

In the heavy rain the field-banks burst, as women go astray when they are free to do as they wish. Clever farmers weed their fields, as the wise throw away delusion, pride and conceit.

Verse 5

No chakravāka birds are to be seen, as dharma flees when the Kali age comes. Rain falls on barren ground and no grass grows, as desire never rises in the heart of Hari's devotee.

Verse 6

The earth shines, crowded with creatures of every kind, as people multiply under good rule. Here and there travellers have stopped, worn out, as the senses go quiet when knowledge arises.

Verse

Sometimes a strong wind blows and the clouds scatter here and there, as the true dharma of a family is lost when a worthless son is born.

Verse

Sometimes it is thick darkness in the daytime, and sometimes the sun shows itself, as knowledge is lost or gained in bad company or good.
