Chapter Fourteen · The rains and their likenesses · Verses 1–

Rāma describes the rains to Lakṣmaṇa. Each sight is matched with something in human life: lightning that does not stay in the cloud is like a wicked man's love, clouds that come low are like the wise bowing when they learn, mountains taking the raindrops are like saints bearing hard words. Small streams swell like the proud rich, muddy water is like the soul wrapped in illusion, ponds filling are like good qualities coming to a good man, and rivers reaching the sea are like the soul finding peace in Hari.

'The proud clouds roar fiercely in the sky, and without my beloved my heart is afraid. The lightning flashes and does not stay in the cloud, like a wicked man's love, which is never steady.

Verse 2

The clouds come down near the earth and rain, as the wise bow low when they gain learning. Mountains bear the blows of the raindrops as saints bear the words of the wicked.

Verse 3

Small streams fill and overflow their banks, as the wicked swell with pride at a little wealth. Water that falls on the ground turns muddy, as the soul is wrapped in illusion.

Verse 4

Water gathers and gathers and fills the ponds, as good qualities come to a good man. River water reaches the sea and becomes still, as a soul finds peace on reaching Hari.

The ground is green and thick with grass, so the paths cannot be made out, as true scriptures are hidden by the quarrels of hypocrites.'
