Chapter 85 · The world in the grip of desire · Verses 1–

In everyone's heart a longing for love wakes: creepers bend toward trees, rivers rise and run to the sea, ponds and pools meet. If such is the state of lifeless things, who can tell what the living do? Beasts, birds, creatures of sky, water and land forget the season and fall under Kāma. All the world is blind and restless with desire; the cakravāka pair do not look at night and day. Gods, demons, men, kinnaras, serpents, spirits and ghouls are always Kāma's servants. Even siddhas, ascetics, great sages and yogis become lovesick. Yogis and ascetics fall under desire, and still more the lowly; those who saw all as Brahman now see all as woman, and women see all as man. For two hours Kāma's play fills the universe. No one stood firm; but those Raghubīra protected were saved.

Desire for love rose in every heart. Creepers saw the trees and bent toward their branches; rivers swelled and ran to meet the ocean, and ponds and pools joined together.

Verse 2

Where such is said to be the state of lifeless things, who can tell what the living do? Beasts, birds and all that move in sky, water and land forgot the season and fell under Kāma.

Verse 3

All the world was blind with desire and restless; the cakravāka birds did not look at night or day. Gods, demons, men, kinnaras, serpents, spirits, ghouls and goblins:

I have not described their state, for they are known to be always servants of Kāma. Even siddhas, ascetics, great sages and yogis came under desire and were pained by separation.

What of the lords of yoga and the ascetics, and what of the lowly? Those who had seen all things moving and still as Brahman now saw them as made of woman; women saw the world as made of man, and men saw it as made of woman. For two hours inside the universe was this play of Kāma.

No one kept steady; Kāma stole the minds of all. Only those whom Raghubīra protected were saved at that time.
