Keeping her husband's feet in her heart, Umā goes to the forest and begins penance, though her tender body is not made for it, giving up every comfort. Her love for his feet grows new each day, she forgets her body and her mind rests in penance. A thousand years she eats roots and fruit, a hundred more only greens. Some days she lives on water and air, some days she fasts. She eats only dry bel leaves fallen on the ground for three thousand years, then gives up even dry leaves, and so is named Aparṇā. Seeing her thin from the penance, a deep voice of Brahmā sounds in the sky: your wish is fulfilled, daughter of the mountain; give up the hard suffering, you will now meet Tripurāri.
