तप की महिमा
Girijā is to go and do penance, as Nārada said; both parents like the idea, for penance gives joy and cures grief and fault. By the power of penance Brahmā makes the world, Viṣṇu protects it, Śambhu destroys it and Śeṣa carries the earth. All creation rests on penance. Hearing this, the mother is amazed and calls the mountain to tell him the dream. Umā, gladly, sets off for her penance after the parents have been given many reasons, and the dear family is troubled, unable to speak. Then the sage Vedaśirā comes and explains to all, and hearing Pārvatī's greatness, they are calmed.शैलकुमारी जाकर तप करे, जैसा नारद ने कहा; माता-पिता को भी यह मत भाया, क्योंकि तप सुख देने वाला है और दुःख-दोष का नाश करता है। तप के बल से ब्रह्मा सृष्टि रचते हैं, तप के बल से विष्णु जगत् की रक्षा करते हैं, तप के बल से शम्भु संहार करते हैं और शेष पृथ्वी का भार उठाते हैं। सारी सृष्टि तप पर टिकी है। यह सुनकर माता चकित हुईं और पर्वत को बुलाकर स्वप्न सुनाया। माता-पिता को बहुत समझाकर उमा प्रसन्नता से तप के लिए चलीं और प्रिय परिवार दुःख से व्याकुल हो गया, मुँह से बात न निकली। तब वेदशिरा मुनि आए और सबको समझाया; पार्वती की महिमा सुनकर सब शान्त हुए।

'पर्वत की पुत्री जाकर तप करे। नारद ने जो कहा वह सत्य है, विचार करके देखो।' माता-पिता को भी यह मत अच्छा लगा: तप सुख देने वाला है और दुःख तथा दोष का नाश करता है।
'The daughter of the mountain should go and do penance. What Nārada said is true, if you think it over.' The mother and father also liked this view: penance gives joy and ends sorrow and fault.

तप के बल से ब्रह्मा संसार रचते हैं। तप के बल से विष्णु सबकी रक्षा करते हैं। तप के बल से शम्भु संहार करते हैं, और तप के बल से शेष पृथ्वी का भार उठाते हैं।

'हे भवानी, सारी सृष्टि तप पर ही टिकी है। यह हृदय में जानकर जाकर तप करो।' ये वचन सुनकर माता चकित रह गईं और पर्वत को बुलाकर उन्होंने स्वप्न सुनाया।
'Bhavānī, all creation rests on penance. Knowing this in your heart, go and do penance.' Hearing these words, the mother was astonished, and calling the mountain, she told him the dream.

४4मातु पितुहि बहुबिधि समुझाई। चलीं उमा तप हित हरषाई ॥प्रिय परिवार पिता अरु माता। भए बिकल मुख आव न बाता ॥

माता-पिता को अनेक प्रकार से समझाकर उमा प्रसन्न होकर तप के लिए चलीं। प्रिय परिवार, पिता और माता सब व्याकुल हो गए, किसी के मुँह से बात नहीं निकली।
The parents were taught in many ways, and Umā set out gladly for her penance. Her dear family, her father and mother were all troubled, and no word came from their mouths.

तब वेदशिरा मुनि आए और उन्होंने सबको समझाया। पार्वती की महिमा सुनकर सब शान्त हो गए।
