Chapter 49·Rāma in the forest, in grief·Verses 1–
Rāvaṇa had asked that only a man should kill him, and the Lord wished to make the Creator's word true. Śiva thinks: if I do not go, I will regret it; and cannot find a way. Thus Īśa was full of thought. At that time the ten-headed one went, took the base Mārīca with him, and at once he became a false deer. The fool carried off Vaidehī by a trick, not knowing the Lord's power. Rāma killed the deer and returned with his brother, saw the hermitage, and tears filled his eyes. Like a man, Raghurāī was wild with separation, and the two brothers wandered through the woods searching. He in whom there is never meeting or parting was seen openly in the pain of separation. The dohā says that Raghupati's deeds are very strange; only the wisest know them. Those of dull mind, in the grip of delusion, keep something else in their hearts.
