Chapter Four · Bowing to the wicked · Verses 1–

With a true heart the poet now bows to the wicked, who are cross with those who do them good and delight in the loss of others. They enjoy ruin and grieve at happiness. In their cruelty they are like Rāhu to the glory of Hari and Hara, like a thousand-armed warrior to another's work, and like a fly in the ghee of another's good. Their heat is fire, their anger is Yama, their sin and faults are wealth. They destroy themselves to ruin others, as hail destroys the crop. They speak of others' faults with a thousand mouths like Śeṣa, and hear them with ten thousand ears like Pṛthu. Words like thunder are dear to them. The dohā closes: the wicked burn at hearing of friend, foe or stranger. Knowing this, the poet folds his hands and pleads with them lovingly.

Now I bow to the wicked, with a true heart. They are cross even with those who help them for no reason. For them another's loss is gain. They are glad at ruin and sad when people prosper.

Verse 2

They are like Rāhu to the glory of Hari and Hara, and like the thousand-armed Arjuna in ruining the work of others. They watch the faults of others with a thousand eyes, and for them another's good is ghee, and their minds are the fly in it.

Explanation

A fly that falls into ghee spoils it and is lost itself.

Verse 3

Their heat is fire, their anger is Yama on his buffalo, and their sin and faults are the wealth of Kubera. They are the risen comet to the good of all, and like Kumbhakarṇa they are best asleep.

Verse 4

To ruin another they give up their own body, as hail melts the crop and melts itself. I bow to the wicked as to Śeṣa in anger: with a thousand mouths he tells of the faults of others.

Verse 5

Again I bow to him as to Pṛthu, who hears of the sins of others with ten thousand ears. And I plead with him as with Indra, always dear to the hosts of the gods.

Explanation

Indra is dear to the gods' host; the wicked man is dear to the host of the wicked. The poet is joking.

The wicked burn when they hear of what is good for a stranger, a foe or a friend. Knowing this, with joined hands I plead with them in love.
