Chapter Three·The power of good company·Verses 1–
Bathing in the company of saints gives its fruit at once: crows become cuckoos and herons become swans. Vālmīki, Nārada and Agastya have told of their own lives. Whatever any living being has gained in understanding, fame, wealth and goodness has come from good company; the world and the Vedas know no other way. Without good company there is no clear judgement, and that comes only by Rāma's mercy. Fools mend by good company, as base metal turns to gold on touching the philosopher's stone. Even the good fall by bad company, yet like the gem on a snake they keep their own virtue. Even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and the poets are shy to praise the greatness of the saints. The poet ends by bowing to the saints, and asks them to give him love for Rāma's feet.

The fruit of the bath is seen at once: crows become cuckoos, and herons become swans. Let no one be surprised at hearing this. The greatness of good company is no secret.
Verse 2

Vālmīki, Nārada and Agastya each told with his own mouth what had happened to him. Every living thing, moving or still, in water, on land or in the sky, tells the same.
Verse 3
mati kīrati gati bhūti bhalāī jaba jehiṃ jatana jahām̐ jehiṃ pāī |so jānaba satasaṃga prabhāū lokahum̐ beda na āna upāū ||

Understanding, fame, a good end, wealth and goodness: whenever, wherever and by whatever means anyone has gained them, know it to be the power of good company. In the world and in the Vedas there is no other way.
Verse 4

Without good company there is no right judgement, and without Rāma's mercy that company is not easy to get. Good company is the root of joy and good, and the fruit of it, the success of every effort, is like its flower.

Fools mend when they find good company, as a base metal turns fair at the touch of the philosopher's stone. By fate, good people may fall into bad company, but like the jewel on a snake's hood they keep their own virtue.
Verse 6

Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva and the poets and the wise are shy when they speak of the greatness of saints. It cannot be told by me, any more than a vegetable seller can tell the worth of a jewel.
Verse

I bow to the saints, whose minds are even and who have no thought of friend or foe. As a flower in the folded hands gives its scent equally to both hands, so they treat all alike.

Saints are simple at heart and want the good of the world. Knowing that, and hearing the child-like plea of this child, be kind, and give me love for the feet of Rāma.
