Chapter Five · Saint and wicked, nectar and poison · Verses 1–

The poet says he has pleaded on his side; the wicked will not turn from their own path, just as crows fed with love never become meat-free. He bows to both saints and the wicked, who give pain in different ways: the saint hurts when he leaves, the wicked hurts when he meets. They are born together, like the lotus and the leech, but differ in nature. The saint is nectar, the wicked is wine, though both come from the one ocean of the world. Each gets praise or blame by his own deeds. The saint is nectar, the moon and the Gaṅgā; the wicked is poison, fire, the sin of the age and the hunter. All know the virtues and faults of each, and each is dear to whoever likes him. The dohā says that the good gets praise for good, the low gets low: nectar is praised for deathlessness, poison for death.

I have made my plea from my side. They will not turn to my side, and I must not be fooled into thinking so. A crow fed with great love will never give up meat.

Verse 2

I bow to the feet of the saint and the wicked. Both give pain, and there is little to tell between them. One takes away life when he leaves, the other gives bitter pain when he meets.

Verse 3

Both are born together in the world, but their natures differ, like the lotus and the leech. Saint and wicked are alike as nectar and wine: one father for both, the deep sea of the world.

Explanation

The lotus and the leech both live in water. The saint and the wicked are likened to amrita and wine, which both came out of the churning of the ocean.

Verse 4

bhala anabhala nija nija karatūtī lahata sujasa apaloka bibhūtī | sudhā sudhākara surasari sādhū garala anala kalimala sari byādhū ||

Each, by his own deeds, wins good name or ill: good fame and wealth for one, shame for the other. The saint is nectar, the moon and the Gaṅgā; the wicked is poison, fire, and the dirt of this dark age, and a hunter.

Everyone knows the virtues and faults of both. But what each person likes is good to him.
