Chapter 39 · The river that flows from the lake · Verses 1–

Even if someone takes pains to go there, sleep and the dullness of cold take hold of his heart and the unlucky one cannot bathe. Unable to bathe or drink, he returns full of pride; and if someone asks him he blames the lake. No hindrance troubles the one on whom Rāma looks with mercy; that man bathes in the lake with respect and is not burned by the three terrible fires. Those who love Rāma's feet never leave this lake. He who wants to bathe in it should keep the company of saints. The poet sees the Mānasa with the eyes of his mind, and his poetic mind is cleaned by wading in. Joy and enthusiasm rose in his heart and a flood of love and delight overflowed. The lovely river of poetry flowed, full of the clear water of Rāma's fame. Its name is Sarayū, the root of good, with the opinion of the world and the Vedas for its lovely banks. That clean daughter of the Mānasa pulls up the weeds and trees of the dirt of this age. The dohā says the three kinds of hearers are the villages and cities on its two banks, and the unmatched gathering of saints is Ayodhyā, the root of all good.
