Chapter 40 · The river and its meetings · Verses 1–

The devotion of Rāma goes to join the Gaṅgā, and the fair fame of Rāma with his brother in battle joins the Sarayū and the lovely great river Soṇa. Between the two streams the Gaṅgā of devotion shines with dispassion and thought, the three-streamed meeting that drives off the three kinds of pain, and flows to the sea that is Rāma's own form. The root of the Mānasa joins the Gaṅgā, and the good who hear it find their minds made pure. The stories of various kinds in between are the banks and woods along the river. The wedding party of Umā and Maheśa are the countless water creatures; the joy at Raghubara's birth is the whirl and the waves. The dohā says the childhood deeds of the four brothers are the many-coloured lotuses; the king, the queens and the household are the bees of merit and the water-birds.
